What this Lytx alert means
This alert occurs when your vehicle is following another vehicle too closely, limiting the time available to react. Why it matters Following distance creates your safety buffer. Without enough space, sudden braking or lane changes can quickly lead to a collision. What Lytx looks for
- Time‑based following distance (measured in seconds, not car lengths)
- Alert threshold: 3 audible alerts (1 initial and 2 repeat alerts) for following distance within a 2 minute timeframe will create an event
- Following distance 4 seconds or greater in ideal conditions
-
Increased space at higher speeds or in traffic
- 55–65 mph: 5 seconds
- Over 65 mph: add more seconds
- Rain, traffic, low visibility: 6+ seconds
- Snow, fog, or heavy vans: 6–8 seconds
How to gauge following distance Pick a fixed object ahead. When the vehicle in front passes it, count “one‑one‑thousand” up to four. If you reach the object before finishing the count, increase your space. Add more seconds as speed increases or conditions worsen.
